“Simpler” Means More Difficult

December 14th, 2007

I register my domains through GoDaddy.com. Lately a lot of my e-mails have been bouncing, so I thought I would finally get off my lazy ass and implement an SPF record. For those who don’t know, an SPF record is basically just a verification stamp that the e-mail address is valid at the domain its being sent from. Anyway, most of my domains I can control through my private hosting setup. Only one domain can’t be controlled through it, because I don’t host that on the same server as my other sites (its a Googlepages site at a domain). All my e-mail is hosted using Google Apps For Your Domain, and their SPF page is here.

For DNS management on that domain, I have to use GoDaddy.com. I’m thinking “no biggie, it should be the same way I did it on these.” WRONG! GoDaddy created an interface, which ended up screwing everything up even more because I had no idea what was going on. I would think that at least they would have a place where someone could manually type in the record, but they don’t even have that. Luckily while searching on Google I stumbled upon this post which described it in its entirety and cleared up my confusion. Below is a quote of the steps that need to be taken.

  1. Login, and go to the “Total DNS Control Panel”
  2. Under the TXT section, click “Add SPF Record”
  3. Select “An ISP or other mail provider” and click OK
  4. Select the “Outsourced” tab, and enter aspmx.googlemail.com as the outsourced domain
  5. Click OK
  6. GoDaddy will display a confirmation with the correct SPF record listed.
  7. Click OK

And that’s it! When you click OK, it will generate what the SPF record will look like – it should look like this: v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all

Once it looks like that, simply wait and it will propogate through the system. Now you have an SPF record for that domain!

So many friggin’ passwords!

December 13th, 2007

Today I decided I was going to change all my passwords. No reason as to why, they were just getting old. I went ahead and did it and found I had to change them in so many places – from e-mail addresses, to my phone (IMAP/POP client), to social networking sites and so on. If only there was a site that would contain all my passwords and let me change all of them on the fly! Oh well, at least Firefox saves the password so if I do forget I can just look it up there :)

Triwing Screwdrivers for Sale!

December 4th, 2007

I have a handful of triwing screwdrivers for sale – for those who don’t know, its a tool that opens a special three-headed screw. These types of screws are security screws generally found in Nintendo devices, but some cell phones have them as well. Here’s a list of the Nintendo devices that I know for sure have this screw, although I’m sure others do as well.

Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance
Gameboy Advance SP
Gameboy Micro
Nintendo DS
Nintendo DS Lite
Gamecube Controllers and Systems
Nintendo Wii Remote and Systems

And of course, the picture:

Anyway, I usually have a listing or two on eBay that contains these screwdrivers, but I’m willing to sell them off of eBay as well. Leave a comment if you’re interested, and be sure to include your e-mail address to I can get in touch with you. They are $4.95 shipped via USPS First Class which takes roughly 5-7 days to arrive, and I only accept PayPal for payments. US customers only. Thanks!

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on a Modded Xbox

December 4th, 2007

First of all.. I know GTA: San Andreas was released a LONG time ago. Second, yes I own an original copy of the game. My Xbox is modded using EvolutionX, and the other day I was having trouble launching GTA San Andreas on it. After tons of searching and experimentation, I’ve found that in the EvoX settings that these values work perfectly:

Video Standard: NTSC – North America
Game Region: Auto
TSR: Disabled
In Game Reset: No

I don’t use In Game Reset at all anyway, I can simply walk the two feet to get to my Xbox to turn it off. I have absolutely NO idea what TSR is, and I’m in the USA so the video standard here is NTSC anyway. These settings worked for me, though there may be a possibility that they won’t work for you. Worth a shot anyway!

Next Time, I’m Camping Out For A Week

November 24th, 2007

Monday evening, as I was driving back from my Business and Digital Arts class, I decided to take 75 home instead of my usual route through Custer. While driving on 75, I saw the local Best Buy – and to my surprise, two tents sitting in front of the door. Now, I didn’t think much of it – I thought maybe they were getting some Wii’s in.

The next evening, however, the tents were still there – in fact there were a few more people out there and what seemed to be a line started to grow. At this point, I knew what it was – the line for the Black Friday sales. But seriously, these guys are starting 3-4 days early? Don’t you guys have family to have dinner with on Thanksgiving, or are you camping out with them in front of a store to save $5 on that mousepad you could have bought at the dollar store?

Some people don’t make sense to me.. like these guys (and girls). I mean seriously, you’re going to suffer for 3-4 days in the cold, missing school, work, and any other things you could have done… for a measly discount. People these days…

Thoughts About A New Site

November 19th, 2007

I’m currently thinking about starting a new site. I’ve run several websites, the most notable are DFWHyundais.com and an online store (no longer in existence, so no need for a URL). I’m thinking about starting a new site.. I want to do a store but I’m not sure what to sell. The other thought I’m having is some kind of community site, relating to a certain subject, for example Nintendo DS or Wii games. Of course, my blog will still be around.. this is just to keep me busy and out of trouble :)

Any ideas?

E-mail From The Future? WTF?!

November 16th, 2007

I keep a Yahoo e-mail account for security purposes.. usually whenever I sign up on a forum to ask a question and know that I won’t be staying there long I will give out that address. So today I went to check to see if any legit e-mails had been sent to that address – when I checked my Bulk Mail folder, this is what I saw:

Spambox

Amazing! In the year 2038, when I’m 51 years old, I will be looking for a new car, some action, and auto insurance. Spectacular!

Gmail + IMAP + Windows Mobile = Failure.

November 8th, 2007

So Gmail recently rolled out with an IMAP service, and knowing some of the benefits of IMAP compared to POP I decided to switch over. I set everything up using Google’s guide for IMAP on WM6 to the word. However, I ran into issues as soon as the first Send/Receive action completed. For some reason, only the headers were downloading!! I didn’t think much of it, and since its a new service from Gmail I thought I might give it a few days for them to sort out the kinks and try again. Now I’m back on POP access.

But curiosity is never more than a hop, skip, and jump away.. and I wanted to see if I was the only one with these issues. Seems like I’m not. And here. Especially considering that the e-mail that was downloaded was all HTML based. So it definitely is a kink in Google’s system.. which will hopefully be sorted out soon (since they did state that they were “working on it”).

Hopefully it won’t be too long before I can finally use labels on my WM device!

Super Mario Bros. 3 on Wii!!

November 5th, 2007

Super Mario Bros. 3 has (finally) been released on Wii’s Virtual Console! Quite possibly one of the best games available of all time, the game is available for only 500 points on the system. Along with the original game, a few short minigames are included which really make it a sweet deal. I just downloaded my copy, and I know I’ll be playing for a really.. REALLY long time (or at least until Super Mario Galaxy is released next week!!)

I found out about it originally because of DigitalBattle.com, thanks you guys for posting about it!

So Much Spam… So Little Time

November 5th, 2007

Everyday, I receive 4-8 spam comments on my entries. I’ve only had this blog for what, a few months now?? Damn spammers, nothing better to do but fill up blogs and other websites with useless advertising for their fraudulent products. Fuck them!
